Livestock Production Assurance

The Livestock Production Assurance (LPA) program is the Australian livestock industry’s on-farm food safety program. It meets the stringent requirements of our export markets, providing an assurance of the safety of red meat grown on Australian farms.

Food safety is paramount to consumers in Australia and in the more than 100 countries which buy our red meat. LPA provides a food safety assurance to these customers and in doing so supports the reputation and on-going economic viability of Australia’s livestock producers and industry. Goats are included in the LPA program.

LPA focuses on seven key on-farm practice areas:

  • Property risk assessments
  • Safe and responsible animal treatments
  • Stock foods, fodder crops, grain and pasture treatments
  • Preparation for dispatch of livestock
  • Livestock transactions and movements
  • Biosecurity
  • Animal Welfare

LPA is a voluntary industry program, however the majority of meat processors require livestock to be sourced from LPA-accredited properties.

Goat producers who become LPA accredited commit to carrying out specific on-farm practices in order to fulfil their responsibility to produce safe red meat.

LPA provides goat producers with a set of guidelines and a National Vendor Declaration/Waybill (NVD/Waybill) to help declare the food safety status of their livestock. In most cases producers will not need to change their on-farm management practices.

The number of goat-producing properties registered on the LPA database continues to grow.

GICA reminds goat producers that they must be fully accredited in the LPA database to continue using the LPA NVD/Waybill and to help protect the integrity of Australia’s red meat industry.
